ICQ.social, where you're only allowed to sign up with your old ICQ number instead of a username
I was trying to make a joke about creating an instance full of catfishing using 'asl' as the punchline, but it just came off like I was making fun of the deaf and hard of hearing community...
I even remember my number AND the password!
strangely still remember mine. Not the password though
you forgot yours? 😝
Oh man mine is in a little red book somewhere buried in my stuff. I could go for that.
Somehow I had completely forgotten about this and now I feel old so thanks for that : p

the first computer in the household was an Hitachi Peach! 🍑 I learned to program Basic on it and built a space shooter game that I sold the source code to another person for $80. It was a business associate of my Dad and I think my Dad gave him the money. 🤭
Maybe i shouldn't use the same password everywhere?
IDE cables where always too short

Bi bong bi bong bi khhhkhhkkkkkhkkshhhttttnnkclclxlxxchhh okay I'm not doing that very well but just imagine I'm making the noise that modems used to make.

computers weren't equipped with millennial numbers, and it was about to break everything. Everyone had to retool everything before the deadline, but they made it.

the scariest thing right now, for me, is the realisation that I know my number and password and the service is still running (just logged in and it all just still works).
I installed the OS on my first computer by installing Windows 95 from a stack of floppy disks and then popping in a Windows ME upgrade CD.
The BSoD was randomly my new best friend until I eventually figured out how to do a clean install.
Oh god yes!!!
if you create this instance, I volunteer to provide a CSS-Stylesheet copying the look of the last true ICQ client (ICQ-lite 2003b)

Ok weird - it "still exists"...

Some slight oddities though - including where it's being used...

Screenshots show ICQ-new website and its general audience - primarily russia?

@spyro Yeah, a Russian company bought them at the end. Apparently it was still very popular there when other countries had long moved on.
@spyro ICQ was bought by a Russian company I think in 2005 or 2006. I assume they focused the bulk of their marketing at within Russia
@spyro recently in Brazil, federal police found nazi, pedo, drug, guns, etc... market in ICQ.

I have toggled in code using the front panel switches on a PDP/11 and then used the single-step switch to watch it execute.

🤬 well to be fair it hadn’t been in use for the past 2 girlfriends and a wife.
oh I would love to have the uh oh! I don't know where to get one but now I am going to look, thank you!
look, I could claim I found my wife through ICQ and you wouldn't believe me. Because the truth is she found me!
Strange thing that I never forgot my number. 🙃
I still know my number by heart. Unfortunately, it was compromised at some point.
thats somehow a bit sad. Like all the lost bits of information scattered in the web at the turn of the century.
@schaf well, I do remember mine…
