I don't understand people travelling to hotter countries in summer, considering it is often too hot over here already.

Budget airlines and EU membership normalised it I think. Even without the EU Brits get up to 90 days in a 180 day period to visit (which is technically unchanged, staying longer than that actually required you to demonstrate you were able to support yourself).
