Hi all!

I'm asking people to go and review Cllr Mandy Clare (CWAC) IMDb page.

Someone has already updated the links to this toxic and dangerous public figure's "home page" on there and on Wikipedia, but it would be nice if we can cancel out the hundreds of positive reviews of the hate documentary "Adult Human Female" on IMDB ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt23844954/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 )

Have fun and please reshare!

Wow!😳 Texas teacher fired after assigning an illustrated Anne Frank book

Censoring one of the most important works documenting the Holocaust and punishing the teacher who dared teach it is pretty much in line with what fascists do. Horrific antisemitism.

Once libraries are nonexistent any modern fascist movement wouldn't even have to burn books, but flick one switch and they'd be remotely deleted from your Amazon Kindle or similar digital “library”.

Capitalists are already building the infrastructure to do this through DRM, so stop believing tech is apolitical - the defunding of libraries and paywalling of information are all part of this. :trantifa:

There's a very specific piece of gendered violence that the trans community rarely talks about, and which was inflicted upon us by WPATH (before WPATH was WPATH) and the APA, and which I will *never* forgive them for.

By requiring trans people to go stealth after transition, to pretend that there had never *been* a transition, by effectively making generations of us a shames of who we were, these organizations have robbed us of our elders. Of the people we can look to to see the future we...

Shower thoughts (social media)

I assert that "Engagement" is antithetical to social media.

For example - Facebook and tiktok have great "engagement" - I know, I've just got out of being suckered by fucking videos I got sent from those platforms for 3 hours...

OTOH. I dip into fedi very much less. It has terrible "Engagement".

But I find my tribe on here all the time.

We talk about real stuff (mostly).

**** The fact that I can pick up and put down Fedi means that I *have* a life to talk about on it. ****

May Fedi forever have terrible Engagement.

Personally I still find it quite addictive though. I wonder if there is any pattern linked to what instance software is being used - e.g Firefish has a feed that moves on a new post and dings. I think Friendica might be less 'pushy' and better at not having that effect.
This entry was edited (1 year ago)

One thing that's very different about the fediverse is how much it's driven by interest rather than proximity. E.g. my best friend at uni was in the next room in 1st year, but I'm not sure I'd ever have talked to him otherwise.

Here almost everyone is people I've discovered through shared interests.

One good thing about it being single user and self-hosted is if I need to enforce a break I can not just block the site, I can turn it off at the source.

I remember, once upon a time, when websites would have counters, and buggy CGI scripts to update them...

I looked at how people do this now (it's now rare to have a counter), and found that no-one does it anymore.

The current solution seems to require PHP and Mysql - and whilst I don't *mind* this approach (it's not evil), and I already have both on my machine) it does seem *awfully* heavyweight...

And it's complicated - "back in the day", you'd install one script, ref. it in the page, and Job Done (tm).

Now, I can't even fucking work out how scripts are run. There's "magic" somewhere inbetween the webserver and everyone seems to want to proxy everything to long-running scripts with their own embedded webservers. What happened to "do one thing well"? Websites are now shipped as entire virtual machines, and no-one knows how ANYTHING works anymore. Searching for help just spits out thousands of wrong or bad answers. Magic numbers and "Just use this script-looking thing, IDK why it works" seem to abound in this area.

What a total crock.

Are there any remaining web counter scripts (that are maintained)?

Is this Another Dead Bit of the Old Internet?

(I'm running nginx btw).

Clean Up The Web!

Just got reminded of this little site I put together when Google had first announced FLoC – now Topics and in Chrome.

Developers, it’s up to you to clean up the web:

• Don’t make sites that only work in Google Chrome.

• Remove Google’s trackers from your web sites and apps

• Don’t legitimise Google (and other surveillance capitalists) by becoming dev advocates, writing for them, etc.

@prvrtl Thanks so much. I really need to update the text (made the site two years ago in reaction to FLoC). All right if I ping you when I get round to that? Don’t want to make you do extra work :)

@remcow Hey, no worries.

Do you mean Google’s latest in-browser surveillance system? I don’t think so. You have to turn it off in Chrome invidiually:

“You can turn off the new ad tracking features (i.e. Topics) in your Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Ads Privacy and Disable Ad Topics, Site Suggested Ads and Ad Measurement.”

The Trans Travel Guide can use your help!!! If it's been useful to you, or could be useful to you (or others), and you know what is happening in your area, can you set a recurring reminder on your phone to look up your state or country on the guide once a month or so and send me emails about anything I missed that may have recently happened there?

You probably have a better idea what the state of your state (or country) is than I do. This will make the guide better!

Illegal just means "legal if you're rich".

Unhelpful error message - suggest IPv6 test?

!Friendica Support

Hi folks,

I was a bit baffled by an error from friendica (which appeared to otherwise be working), complaining that .well-known/host-meta was not accessible, and that this was a "severe" problem.

BUT - clicking the link in the error resulted in seeing the host-meta downloaded.

After a bit of head scratching (I've recently moved to nginx), I figured it out.

My local internet has only IPv4 connectivity - so it worked. My nginx was misconfigured, and has been ignoring requests on IPv6.

Can I suggest that the Admin panel add an additional test for ip4 and ip6 connectivity, so that admins can be warned?

Additionally, the message about host-meta might be reworded to include a hint to check IP6 connectivity or something.

TTFN, have fun folks,

-Ian

Matthew reshared this.

Friendica Support reshared this.

@Ian Molton This feels a little too low-level an issue for Friendica to warn admins about.

I’m not even even sure we have information from the PHP script to even show the relevant warning message.

Friendica Support reshared this.

I think it would be possible @Hypolite Petovan to get the DNS record of the baseurl and then do something with that information. And getting this information into the admin panel might be a niceexercise as it is separated from the complexity of most Friendica features.

Friendica Support reshared this.

@Tobias We can check whether there's both an IPv4 and an IPv6 addresses attached to a given domain but I don't think we can test further. We need to perform an HTTP request based on the domain, not based on the IP address, because of virtual hosts.

Friendica Support reshared this.

I think just adding a comment to the existing error message like

"this error may be caused by incorrect DNS configuration, lack of ipv4 or 6 connectivity, or take to enable ipv6 on the webserver"

Would be sufficient. A DNS check would be a nice addition though.

Friendica Support reshared this.

@Ian Molton @Tobias We can definitely update the error message.
