Once libraries are nonexistent any modern fascist movement wouldn't even have to burn books, but flick one switch and they'd be remotely deleted from your Amazon Kindle or similar digital “library”.
Capitalists are already building the infrastructure to do this through DRM, so stop believing tech is apolitical - the defunding of libraries and paywalling of information are all part of this.

Don't worry, my parents who kicked me out for having been outed as a lesbian always remember to tell me they either were forced to do it because 'they love me so much and don't want me to end in hell' or just unwillingly admit their religion is a hive mind that instantly rejects fiercely anything that's out of the norm.
Their take has always been that I hurt THEM and if there's ever going to be any kind of true reconciliation, it's me who has to ask for forgiveness.
It has now been 26 years and I haven't found it in myself to say 'sorry I forced you to kick me out '.
Also, the sheer "no u" of their argument is infuriating. It's such a bullying thing to say to someone

Shower thoughts (social media)
I assert that "Engagement" is antithetical to social media.
For example - Facebook and tiktok have great "engagement" - I know, I've just got out of being suckered by fucking videos I got sent from those platforms for 3 hours...
OTOH. I dip into fedi very much less. It has terrible "Engagement".
But I find my tribe on here all the time.

One thing that's very different about the fediverse is how much it's driven by interest rather than proximity. E.g. my best friend at uni was in the next room in 1st year, but I'm not sure I'd ever have talked to him otherwise.
Here almost everyone is people I've discovered through shared interests.

I remember, once upon a time, when websites would have counters, and buggy CGI scripts to update them...
I looked at how people do this now (it's now rare to have a counter), and found that no-one does it anymore.
The current solution seems to require PHP and Mysql - and whilst I don't *mind* this approach (it's not evil), and I already have both on my machine) it does seem *awfully* heavyweight...
And it's complicated - "back in the day", you'd install one script, ref. it in the page, and Job Done (tm).
Now, I can't even fucking work out how scripts are run. There's "magic" somewhere inbetween the webserver and everyone seems to want to proxy everything to long-running scripts with their own embedded webservers. What happened to "do one thing well"? Websites are now shipped as entire virtual machines, and no-one knows how ANYTHING works anymore. Searching for help just spits out thousands of wrong or bad answers. Magic numbers and "Just use this script-looking thing, IDK why it works" seem to abound in this area.
What a total crock.
Are there any remaining web counter scripts (that are maintained)?
Is this Another Dead Bit of the Old Internet?
(I'm running nginx btw).

Clean Up The Web!
Just got reminded of this little site I put together when Google had first announced FLoC – now Topics and in Chrome.
Developers, it’s up to you to clean up the web:
• Don’t make sites that only work in Google Chrome.
• Remove Google’s trackers from your web sites and apps
• Don’t legitimise Google (and other surveillance capitalists) by becoming dev advocates, writing for them, etc.

Autism Spectrum Registry
In accordance with RSA-A:30,31, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has established this online Autism Registry, in order for providers who diagnose new cases of autism to register their findings.New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services
The research implications of US state autism registries (as mentioned in @dramypsyd’s petition) are hinted at in some of these, e.g.
‘to inform the planning of service delivery to children with autism and their families and to facilitate autism research’ (Delaware)
‘To identify factors that might be associated with birth defects [including being Autistic!]’ (Indiana)
‘they are instrumental in establishing significant risk factors, potential causal factors, and cellular-level research results’ (New Jersey)
The third is from this linked paper (PDF), which also helpfully discusses the positions of all eight states, including a comparison table (attached): https://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/autism/documents/2016%20overview%20of%20States%20Autism%20Registries%20Brief.pdf

Still having trouble with Rhode Island’s website, but this Spectrum article from 2011 explains what RI intended to do with its registry: https://www.spectrumnews.org/news/rhode-island-plans-statewide-registry-for-autism-research/
They wanted to register every Autistic person in the state – ‘an estimated 2,500 children from 1st grade through high school, as well as preschoolers in early intervention programs and adults with autism [sic]’
Despite mentioning adults here, there’s only one other mention in the article, when one of there researchers refers to ‘the support and services her kid needs’, the kid being, in the article’s words, her ‘adult son with autism [sic]’
They also intended to use ADOS, a very child-oriented diagnostic tool – it’s the one that uses the picture book ‘Tuesday’
‘Less than half a million dollars would enable the group to build a registry database and hire a three-person team to begin recruiting participants’, Daniel Dickstein of Brown University is reported as having said

Why did Elon have any intel on the plans of the Ukrainian military?
Democracies must get rid of billionaires or they'll destroy them.
Wouldn't surprise me if Zelensky carries a grudge over this.
When 3rd parties decide to get involved in active conflicts, they sort of lose their 3rd party status. While I really doubt Ukraine would send a hit squad to the US for Musk, if I was Elon I'd avoid flights over international water.
If you have money, it always seems ok in the United States to destroy lives.
(Trump) Families destroyed at the Mexican border because of ICE operations? Meh, you can't prove it's me that did that!
(Musk's Starlink) Kids dying in Ukraine? Meh, you can't prove it was my decision that did that.
(Apple & Foxconn) People committing suicide in electronics factories in China because of deplorable living conditions? Meh, you can't prove it's my business model that did that.
Also, #Musk ‘s reasons are utterly immaterial. No one person gets to decide on this sort of thing. For all of our criticisms, this is what democracy is. #Ukraine has democratically decided to defend itself against an aggressor and the US has democratically decided to assist its ally.
He feels his opinion is more important than the hundreds of millions of people that agree with this course of action. It isn’t.

Unhelpful error message - suggest IPv6 test?
Hi folks,
I was a bit baffled by an error from friendica (which appeared to otherwise be working), complaining that .well-known/host-meta was not accessible, and that this was a "severe" problem.
BUT - clicking the link in the error resulted in seeing the host-meta downloaded.
After a bit of head scratching (I've recently moved to nginx), I figured it out.
My local internet has only IPv4 connectivity - so it worked. My nginx was misconfigured, and has been ignoring requests on IPv6.
Can I suggest that the Admin panel add an additional test for ip4 and ip6 connectivity, so that admins can be warned?
Additionally, the message about host-meta might be reworded to include a hint to check IP6 connectivity or something.
TTFN, have fun folks,

Content warning: Unhelpful error message - suggest IPv6 test?
The test is not done on the IP layer, but performs a simple HTTP(s) GET request for the well-known information. So if the warning is issued in the admin panel, there can many causes why the GET request not working.
From a misconfigured REWRITE for URLs in the web server to your network on the server not working properly for whatever reason. And everything in between.

I think just adding a comment to the existing error message like

Would be sufficient. A DNS check would be a nice addition though.
